Chuck, along with Buddy suggestion's I'd make sure your tune-up is correct. Check you dwell angle, points gap has alot to do with initial rev of a engine. recheck you timing, With the bigger cam you'll have to have alittle more initial timing than a stock motor which is usually around 6 to 10 degrees and alittle more idle also usually after warm-up around 750 to 800 RPM. Just make sure the little things are set correctly, most of the time it's dist. related (dwell angle off, points, condenser, ect... bad and sometimes the carb.) was the carb. know good before you rebuild the motor?
