 | Carborator questions/ Crankcase ventilation woes -- Rod, 03/01/2001
I have a 1962 galaxie 500 with 352 2V. I rebuilt it this past summer and I have some questions concerning carborator ajustment. It seems the car runs a little rich(strong exaust smell). The automatic choke is set perfect and opens fully once engine heats. My main question I guess would be, is their any other way to make car run a little leaner? I feel maybe combustion is not what it could be. I was wandering if some of you could give me some tips on leaning out the engine like it's supposed to be. One more thing off the subject. It also seems I'm getting some engine crankcase vent gases in the cab while driving. I have the old road draft type ventilation system(which I cleaned when rebuilding engine). I have new dual exaust, new gaskets, etc. I was wondering if the cowl lacing could be to blame. It is old and hardened. I believe the little bit I smell could be slipping past this and into the fresh air intake. Suggestions please. Thanks so much! Rod |
| | RE: Carborator questions/ Crankcase ventilation woes -- RC Moser, 03/02/2001
I'd first make sure the ventilation system is clear and not plugged. If so this can cause the smell inside the car. Next I'd do a compression check. If you have worn compression rings you will get blow-by pass the rings and pressurize the bottom end (oil pan area) causing the oil to become airborne and it will force it's way into the ventilation system causing the blow by. Next I'd remove the valve covers and clean out the oil return passages, older ventilation system design builds up alot of sludge that sticks to the valve covers and will plug up the return holes leaving alot of oil in the valve cover area and this will also vaporize and be vented overboard and you will smell it. The compression check will tell you alot about the condition of your engine. If you have excessive wear between the cylinder walls and pistons you will get blowby. Just make sure you the system is not plugged up. As for the carb. weak compression, bad or improperly adjusted points and condition of the wires and plugs play a big role on how lean you engine runs. A vacuum gauge will also indicate how well or worn your engine is by how much vacuum it will pull. Hope this helps or maybe will spark some more opinions on your problem. |

| | RE: Holley -- Travis Miller, 03/01/2001
According to the Holley Carburetor Numerical Listing book dated 1989, D0ZF-9510-AA traces down to a 1970 428 Cobra-Jet with emissions and manual transmission. But it shows LIST 4513-1AAA.
Recheck the List number on the carb. Number 4523-1 shows a one barrel for a 1969 250 6 cylinder. |

 | help identifying a 428 -- Mike, 02/28/2001
Hi, I bought an engine and was told it was a 390GT from a '68 Cougar. I was just checking and found the code 'C7ME-A' on the block which is the code for a 428. (?) Besides checking the bore (390 bore is 4.05" and 428 is 4.13") how can I figure out what I really have?
thanks, Mike |
| | RE: help identifying a 428 -- bear, 02/28/2001
The 428 is externally balanced so the dampners and fly wheels are wieghted. I believe the 410 is also balanced this way. |
| | | More part codes... -- Mike, 02/28/2001
Ok , here's what I found:
Manifold: C8AE (also 9425-A and an 'S') Heads: C8AE-H (also 7L28 and an 'E') Block: C7ME-A Connecting Rods: C7AE-B Crank: 2U Piston: says 390 4V
So to the best of my ability to check, the block and connecting rods have 428 numbers, the Pistons and Crank have 390 markings and I have no idea on the manifold and heads.
Can anyone clarify?
Thanks, Mike |
| | | | RE: More part codes... -- Rick, 03/02/2001
This is a 390 motor. C7ME-A can either be 390 or 428. C7AE-B rods were use in both 390 and 428. 428 rods had the 13/32", and 390 had 3/8" bolts. Same rods different bolts. 2U 390 crank. Heads are 390. If the heads have a 14 bolt exhaust pattern they are suposed to be GT heads, but I have seen these heads on factory 2V engines. I think if you had a 390 in a 67-68 mustang or cougar they had to have this bolt pattern for the special manifold to fit in the engine bay, regaurdless of 2V or 4V. |
| | | | | Correction above -- Rick, 03/02/2001
I forgot to specify that only the 428 CJ had the 13/32 rod bolts. Standard 428 has the same bolts as the 390. |

I have a 1964 galaxie xl rotting to the ground,1967 fastback mustang, cobrajet torino, 1969 mustang grande, all in various stages of disrepair, and a cougar convertible, bought most of them before i was married, cannot afford to fis any of them up. I feel so disgusted |
| | RE: overwhelmed -- RC Moser, 02/28/2001
Hey, they been setten for a while, so it won't hurt them to set some more. Only thing I can suggest is not to store them over dirt or the bottoms of the cars will rot. I don't think any of us working men has enough money to go around. And when we usually get a head alittle something comes up to take it. So, we've all had that overwhelmed feeling at one time or another. |
| | RE: overwhelmed -- Rick Thompson, 02/28/2001
I had the same problem. My advice is to sell some and focus on the remaining. We are not getting any younger....I still have two left to do. The first two took 15 years to finish. |

in very poor and rusted condition? Other than being a fastback I nothing unique. Also, it has a aluminum case T-10 in it, are those common for those years or were most cast iron? |
| | | | | RE: how much are 1967 fastbacks worth anyway -- ERIC, 02/28/2001
I know all about it. I have a 74 F100 in a barn about 75 miles away from me. It has a 1985 stiker on it, last time it was on the road. For the last 5 years I've realy been hopeing to finish it. But last november when I had some bucks saved up I found a 71 torino 500 fastback. Now that car is sitting now too. Got to save them bucks!!

| | | | | RE: how much are 1967 fastbacks worth anyway -- Will, 03/01/2001
I think the T-10's were fairly rare, but not necessarily valuable. The toploaders are probably worth more.
If the car is severly rotted, it is not worth a whole lot. If it is something special (K code, S code, etc.) that'll help some. The real question is, how rotted is it? |
| | | | | RE: how much are 1967 fastbacks worth anyway -- BOB HOPKINS, 03/01/2001
I can not beleive a aluminum T-10 was stock in 67 anything Ford product ,from 64 up top-loaders were installed. T-10 were 61-63 cars aluminum case Cobra's light weight race cars? Right Mr -F |
| | | | | | RE: how much are 1967 fastbacks worth anyway -- disgusted, 03/01/2001
I don't think the aluminum T-10 is original, hard telling what has happened to the car in the past 34 yrs. I have wondered if all aluminum T-10 's have the same casting numbers or if they are application specific. The car would need a thorough going thru The 390 Galaxie XL needs going thru as well, really don't want to part any of them out(motors, transmissions, interior parts on the XL, etc) As far as cruising goes when the XL was on the road it was such a pleasure to drive of course I like the CJ better in other areas. |

 | shelby roll bar....... -- 410cougar, 02/28/2001
im not to knowlegable on shelby's. did the 67 come with a built in roll bar. or was that the 68? if so would this also work in the 67-68 cougar. i know that the side panels are molded to go around the bar in the rear. does anyone know off where i can get one? or even some kind off blue prints to make one. so we can make one in the shop. thanx guys. |
| | RE: shelby roll bar....... -- Will, 03/01/2001
The 67 shelby had a rollback similar to the 68. Actually I think it was the same rollbar for the FB, but the 68 convertable rollbar was probably different. I've never compared them.
The Mustang shops carry them (Branda, Mustangs Unlimited, etc.), but they are around $400, and they say they do not provide adequate protection in a rollover. I don't know if that's because of the way they're mounted, or if they are too weak. I plan on having one made similar to the Shelby, but strong enough for rollover protection. That's a year or so away, though. |
| | | RE: shelby roll bar....... -- 410cougar, 03/01/2001
ill just give on of those shops a yell. see if i can take a picture of one just to get a general idea. thanx |
| | | RE: shelby roll bar....... -- Greg B, 03/01/2001
The Shelby roll bar in my 69 is purely cosmetic,it bolts into the side panels just below the rear quarter windows. No protection there, but it makes a nice mount for my shoulder belts. To be effective for rollover protection the mounts would need to be triangulated and go to the frame rails. No single hoop would offer proper protection |

| | RE: shelby roll bar....... -- Morgan, 03/05/2001
Well this may be a little late but here is my input. I have had or have both styles. I had a 67 Mustang convertible that had a 68 Shelby Convertible roll bar, which is different than the one used in the fastback. The convertible roll bar as some one stated is purely for looks, and it does look neat. On my 67 Shelby GT-500 The roll bar is much stronger and does go to the frame rails (welded) and also has mounting points at the roof line. I strongly believe that this would offer some protection in a roll over. With that said I do not think it would work well in a cougar without some modification. |

i work on a marine air staition so were just going to machine a solid stock aluminum 6 point. just like the ones that 5.0's use with the low front bar for easy access into the fron seats. should look pretty good. ill post the blue prints this week. im getting out in about a year and a half so i need to take use of what ive got at the moment. metal shop composite shop NDI shop. well ive gotten the 428 crank in the mail. talk about having a grin on my face all day. so right at the moment all i have to do is come up with a set of forged aluminum 410 pistons and im off to the machine shop. does any one know of anyone other then ross. i looked at theirs, but the 500 dollars without wrist pins and rings doesnt swallow well. well your all going to cry cause im cuting up a tri power intake ive got to manufacture a blower intake for a offey 6-71 blower i bought. i picked that up this weekend at a swap meet for 625.00. (another grin all day) i tried to convince my girl friend that the blower pully would make a good flower pot for the coffee table. needless to say she didnt go for that one. anyways ill post the pic of the adapter plate that i make to you guys next week. boy im glad that ive got an in house machine shop here on base to play with. let ya all know how it goes. |

Just to answer my own question probably the difference in pin heights. How much does that leave on the crown of a TRW forged? did you use forged pistons? Did you mill new "eyebrows" back in the top? |

Ford power parts makes them. thek take 390 TRW forged pistons and mill .100 off the top and cut new valve reliefs. I ordered a set 3 weeks ago, havent gotten them yet but hope to get them soon. the set including moly sealed power rings is about $425.00, and they do include wrist pins. they are not balanced though. there phone # 1-562-921-5300. owners name is Ron. |

im not really going to cut it up. just weld a few supports to the runners. besides it was a free intake. i had to repair a few of the bolt holes in it. its not a very show worthy piece. do you know where that i could find the intake you described. ill look into it. i knew id catch someones attention when i mentioned cutting up. sorry, didnt mean to use such strang language in here. its really good to see that there are so many devoted FE guys. if it was a chevy forum noone would care less. thanx |
| | | | | | RE: didnt mean to scare you all.... -- BOB HOPKINS, 03/02/2001
Seems to me I saw a blowwer manafold at the Ford Carlile meet last year or year before. Allways a 360degree Wiand/Offy at meets I think the distribution on a 360 style would work much better flow wise, and who would care if you cut one up, also a duel quad may even be better! |
| | RE: boys and their toys...... -- KarlJay, 03/02/2001
Congrats on the new crank! I did the same thing, took a 428 crank and used the L2291F forged pistons and had them cut down to about zero deck. I had the whole thing balanced and used a new Mcleod flywheel. I had the pistons measured and was told it had just over 1/2" material at the lowest point from the underside, so trimming off .1 wasn't a bad deal. I used a 60 over 390 block because I couldn't find a good condition/ fair price 428 block and didn't want to waste a new set of pistons. As a side note, my cranking compression is about 195~200 and that's with 80cc heads. With a blower, I think you would want the CR to be about 8~8.5 or so, make sure you take this into account before you write the check!
Hampton Blowers makes FE blower intakes that might be worth looking at, http://hamptonblowers.com $775 is a bit high, but it might be a better design. |
