 | Do headers for a 390 powered '62 T-bird exist? -- Paul Lovett, 08/24/2000
If so where?
Thanks,
Paul Lovett |
| | RE: Do headers for a 390 powered '62 T-bird exist? -- Lou, 08/25/2000
Not as far as I know. If you are hopping up a T-Bird you should be aware of the rear window problem. Over a 100 MPH they tend to leave. The rear window in my 60 HiPo left at 114 one one night, and I was only showing 3800 on the in overdrive. Is your T-Bird standard shift? |
| | | RE: Do headers for a 390 powered '62 T-bird exist? -- Paul Lovett, 08/26/2000
It's not my T-Bird. It belongs to a friend of mine in Germany. I didn't know about the rear window leaving, but I'll pass it on to him. He could end up on the autobahn, so that is good info to know.
Do you know of any manifolds that are better than the stock T-Bird manifolds and that would fit.
Thanks,
Paul |

you might try Crites Engineering . he makes a lot of stuff for T-bolts and T-bolt replicas. I know he does header for 460s to full size galaxies and early Fairlanes. also weird and wonderfull things like fiberglass A/FX comet hoods. |

 | FE book, and CJ intake info needed please -- geo, 08/24/2000
Hi, A couple of months ago I heard that there is a book that is considered THE book regarding info on FE engines. Since then I have forgotten the name of both the author and the title. I was hoping one of you guys might be able to write me back and tell me what it is called, thanks.
Also, I'm finally ready to put that 4v carb on my 390. My two choices for an intake are an Edelbrock Performer aluminum intake or a cobra jet intake. The aluminium is pretty expensive so I'm leaning towards the cj. While surfing this forum 2 months ago I ran across somebody saying you could pick one up for $130(US) bucks. What I'd like to know is where? I'm from Calgary (in Canada) therefore any canadian sources would be prefered, yet if you know someplace in the States I could order from, your info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Geo |
| | RE: FE book, and CJ intake info needed please -- Luke, 08/25/2000
For books go to Ilovemymustang.com. Search the book section. They have several good books covering FE engines. As far as CJ manifolds, I have one for sale. $150 US plus shipping.

 | 390 and High Energy Ignition -- Brian, 08/24/2000
Hi, I have a 66 LTD with a 390 I have installed the Pertronix ignitor in the distributor and I am pretty satisfied with it. My gas milage increased and the car seems to have more power in the upper rpm ranges 65mph+. I was reading some of the earlier posts about using a duraspark distributor on the FE blocks. Would I be better of to go this route instead of with my current Pertronix setup? Would there be any gain in performance or reliability? If the answer is yes then what do I need to get? A distributor and a Duraspark box from what year of car or truck? Just looking to see how much it will cost and if I will get better reliability or performance. Just found this forum and I have found lots of good info! Thanks |
| | RE: 390 and High Energy Ignition -- gerry, 08/25/2000
No, Brian. An electronic conversion, either optical, hall effect, or magnetic have equivalent results...a more effective trigger. The problem with points is that they couldn't carry much current otherwise they would have an extraordinarily short life. Electronic triggers just do this job with greater consistency and are relatively insensitive to higher primary voltages resulting in greater coil output. You do not need a duraspark. |
 | road tube? (long) -- don jr, 08/24/2000
I have a 65 f-100 with a 352. I know the old engine is tired and has lots of blowby. Im going to replace it with a 390 when time and money are less of an option. But right now i need to get it home from NC. It has a road tube? instead of a pcv. is the valve cover supposed to connect to the tube soemhow or does it vent to the outside. mine is open and smoke is going everywhere. Im ashamed to drive it. I cant be a gross polluter. Can some one tell me how to fix this thing? until i get time to replace the engine. Thanks |
| | RE: road tube? (long) -- Dave Shoe, 08/24/2000
Stick a rubber hose on the end of the draft tube (or valve cover) and run it into your air cleaner snout.
Smoke will disappear completely, but idle will get rougher so you may need to add a couple hundred idle-RPM to keep it from stalling.
Not a great fix, but it worked for me long ago. I ended up switching back and forth between preferring the smoke and rough idle, because I found them both to be irritating. Switching back and forth made it more bearable.

| | | RE: road tube? (long) -- don jr, 08/24/2000
theres no place on the air cleaner to run it to. i was thinking of running a pcv valve. and hook it to some source of vacuum. but i dont have a vacuum tree anywhere to get vacuum. please help. thanks Don. |
| | | | RE: road tube? (long) -- Dave Shoe, 08/24/2000
All you gotta do is stick it loosely in the snout. All blowby will get drawn into the air cleaner.
If you have an open-element air cleaner (i.e.: you can see the entire air cleaner element when it's properly installed), then it gets a bit tougher, but it's still do-able.
Don't worry about finding a precision fit for the hose - my suggestion is a kludgy fix and it's supposed to look funky. Heck, add a little duct tape to the mess to give it that "I ain't got a dime in this truck" feel. I always enjoy emphasizing the radical appearance of these temporary fixes - it seems to make it more sporting or something. Also, te creepier they look, the more reliable they tend to be.

| | | | | RE: road tube? (long) -- Rod Mauldin, 09/14/2000
Hey Don, I just had my 62 Galaxie finally rebuilt after owning it 16 years. The whole time I've owned it, until now, it did the same thing. My road draft tube even got a little clogged and it started coming out the oil breather and dipstick tube. So here's what I did. I found me some old chrome valve covers for it. They had the oilfiller hole on oneside and the pcv hole on the other. I got a chrome open style air filter. It came with a hose fitting that can be installed on the bottom of the lower air filter plate. Which I installed. I then went to the parts store, got a hose and hose fitting for the valve cover. Ran the hose from the valve cover to the bottom side of the air filter. That did it. Although like the other fellow said, it did idle rougher. So like him, I just idled it up a little. When I rebuilt my engine, a 352, I went back entirely stock. Blue valve covers, original air cleaner etc. And no it doesn't smoke anymore, YIPPEE! I do still have the air cleaner if you need one. It has a reproduction "352 C.I.D." sticker on it.It looks fairly nice.Unfortunatly I no longer have my valve covers. I'm in N.C. also so it wouldn't take long to get it if you need it. Good Luck! | | RE: Forum changes coming up, / Engine bolts -- Ken Mosby, 08/28/2000
I posted a tip to the general forum not realizing we had our own FE forum. I like the appearance of the web site. It makes me feel like I'm handling original literature from the '60s. I can almost smell the musty pages. The information exchange is great. It's nice we have a support group out there. I feel like standing up and saying "Hi my name is Ken I'm an FEoholic." I do need help. I've got a smoker that still needs to be torn down and rebuilt! What size bolts do I need to bolt a '69 CJ to my engine stand? |
 | Screamin'T-Bird???? -- Bill, 08/22/2000
Greetings,
I've got a line on a reasonably priced '61 T-Bird w/o engine. Now I'm scratchin' my chin day-dreamin' of building a nice sleeper. Can anyone tell me the possibility of somewhat easily installing a 427/428 in this car?
Thanks. Bill |
| | RE: Screamin'T-Bird???? -- Lou, 08/22/2000
The original engine was a 390. 390,427,& 428 are all the basic block (332 & 352 also) This would be a bolt in job, but watch trans mount. |
 | Head ID -- Mike, 08/20/2000
I may have posted the wrong number for my heads ...the correct number is C8 AE-H...no zero in there ..sorry..now I hear that this was on a 428 passenger car? what like a 7 liter galaxy? |
| | RE: Head ID -- Ed Foral, 08/21/2000
Mike C8AE-H casting was used into the 70's on 390/360 trucks as well as 390s including 2V and GT's from '68 on the only difference in some applications was the number/style of exhaust bolt holes.

Shucks Mike, I was hoping the “O” was real and the “A” was a misread! There’s still a chance you might have something interesting in the bottom-end.

hey guys a got a 69 mach 1 with a 428(not original) I had to buy rear brake drums,my were tost,I put new wheel cylinders, shoes, and drums.I put passengers side together(no problems)but the drivers side drum wont fit over shoes i looked it over and cant find anything wrong. brakes are not my strong point. If you have any advice please tell meas soon as possible. This is no show car(actually a mut) but it is all i have.I need to get running soon. keep on hot rodding!!

| | RE: help my brake job went bust. help! -- bob wilson, 08/20/2000
DAle, It sounds like to me the parking cable on the left side is partial applied, frozen and when installing the parking brake equalizer arm it is pushing the shoes out causing the drum not to slide over the shoes, try leaving out the arm and reassy, if the drum slides over the shoes and you can manually adjusts the brakes, check the braking cables and the parking brake adjustment if the cables are free, the cables should slide freely in the casing, hope this helps, bob |
| | RE: help my brake job went bust. help! -- Mike S., 08/20/2000
Try screwing in the shoe adjuster, then see if the drum will go over it. Some advice: If you are not very good at brakes, get some help!!! You can get yourself into a bad situation on the road. Good luck.

 | Have part #'s/Pls help me ID trans!!! -- Grant, 08/20/2000
Still cant find any "tag" on trans but did find the following parts numbers on it in my '66 Galaxie w/390GT (was 352OEM)
Front/bellhousing aluminum RFC5AP-7976A Middle cast iron C5AP7006A Tailshaft aluminum C5AP7A040
As you can see, its a 3 piece bolt together with a 14 bolt pan. So is it a CruiseOMatic or an FMX? Can these trans names be used interchangeably? A local Mustang reto place says yes!
Want to get a TCI torque converter from Summit...says its for a 68-71 FMX 1.375 crank pilot 29-spline. Also, a shift kit. Will they fit this trans cause parts are non-returnable says Summit. Did FMX have the same crazy L,D123,D23 column shift like CruiseO?
Sorry for all the questions but the leak is driving my wife nuts...ruining her concrete driveway!
Thanks in advance for your help!

 | 428cj flexplate questions??? -- Paul, 08/20/2000
Hello, Im in the process of buying a 69 cobra. The eng. was just rebuilt and the car has vibration at idle. Im told the the machine shop incorrectly put a new 390 fly wheel in the car at the time of rebuild. Would this be the problem? Could it be something more costly? Where can i find a flexplate? Also the breather on the car is missing. Did the 428cj share this with any others? Like 302 boss, 390??? Thanks for any help! Paul |
| | RE: 428cj flexplate questions??? -- Alan C., 08/20/2000
Yes, it is definitely a problem. 428s are detroit balanced 390s are zero balanced which means the 428 flexplate will have a counterweight welded to it where as the 390 will not. You need to get the correct flexplate. A detroit balance is external and a zero balance is internal. A 410 Mercury also shares this balance. 79 and newer 460s are externally balanced as are 82 and later 302/5.0. |
| | | RE: 428cj flexplate questions??? -- RC Moser, 08/20/2000
To go along with Alan's response. Don't run the engine with the wrong flexplate. If you rev it up you will blow the bottom end! As Alan stated you HAVE TO HAVE A 410 or 428 Flexplate to go along with the 428 CRANK which was in both the 410 and 428 engines. |
| | | | RE: 428cj flexplate questions??? -- Paul, 08/23/2000
Thanks for the help guys! |
| | | | | RE: 428cj flexplate questions??? -- robert, 08/26/2000
if you can find a genuine ford 428 flexplate from a swap meet. about $125 for nos last i knew . you can also try a local ford truck dealer as they were stocked for the heavy trucks until they were discontinued about 2 years ago. there also is a auto parts supplier called pioneer who was stocking them as of about 6 months ago when i bought mine. pioneers mainly known for their line of speedo and clutch replacement cables. |
