Rug_AE2 in excellent shape. What is it worth?? |
| | RE: Depends on what shape it's in. -- Gerry Proctor, 05/13/2005
You can buy a brand new one with no core with a new DK nodular maincase from David Kee for $1,700. That's everything perfect.
Obviously, not correct for car show perfection but absolutely top knotch as far as performance. |

| | RE: Bid spline toploader -- dave, 05/14/2005
Was in a 56 Ford PU powered by a 427 low rizer. Shifted like new and no noise. Owner is restoring with correct components. Trans came from a Mustang that was wrecked with low miles, I am told.. Will be for sale soon . Dave |

| | RE: vibration in brand new 390 after tranny swap -- walt, 05/09/2005
check with the info giacamo gave you,ask if the flywheel was replaced,i have had a cracked flywheel, vibrate and was noisy, the other rare prob was that the engine was over reveeded, and the torque converter got out of shape,i still would like to know high it was run!! if the converter was replaced,i think there ar not to be any balance weights on it,maybe giacamo, hawkrod,or mr F can lead you the right way |

| 67 fb 390 gt -- MIKE, 05/06/2005
More than one person suggest to me to b0re my engine to 406 or 405 and replace my crank shaft i dont know if 406 or 405 is for the total cid cause my engine original bore and stroke is 4. 05 by 3. 78 if some one have done this i would like to know how good it is and if there is a real good power improbement. however if ther is heads, cam, intake and other items to be replaced to do this set right. thanks in advance this forum is just fantastic!. |

| | RE: 67 fb 390 gt -- Glenn, 05/08/2005
A 406 is a 4.13 bore and a 3.78 stroke. Your 390 block may or may not be able to handle this overbore. You can check which wall cores your block has to determine if this is even doable then sonic check. I'd just clean the bores up as needed to keep some meat for future rebuilds. You can pickup a 428 crank for a little more stroke giving you a 410 with the 390 bore. Per Dave Shoe a 17/64" drill bit shank will fit snugly between 390 wall cores and a 13/64" between the 428 wall cores. You can access the wall cores by knocking out the freeze plugs to check. G. |
| | | RE: 67 fb 390 gt -- MIKE, 05/09/2005
Thanks for the input! if a replace the crank for 428 my engine is gonna gain power? or there is not much perfformance difference? |
| | RE: 67 fb 390 gt -- andrew3, 05/09/2005
Didn't all the 67 S-Code engines come with the 428 crank? If this is an original engine, are you sure you dont already have that crank? I thought that was one of the things that made it a "GT" version of the engine. |
| | | RE: 67 fb 390 gt -- MIKE, 05/09/2005
YES IS THE ORIGINAL ENGINE. THAT IS NEW FOR ME SO I ALL READY HAVE THAT 428 CRANK ON THIS ENGINE! THE PORPUSE OF MY POSTS IS JUS TO ASK AND TRY TO GAIN MORE POWER OUT OF THIS ENGINE I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO MODIFIED THIS ENGINE BUT NOT EXTREMELY, FOR SAMPLE I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF REPLACING MY CAM USIN 270 DURATION (INTAKE) (BUT I DONT KNOW THE RIGTH LIFT) WILL HELP OR IS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL CAM. THE GUY I GOT THIS CAR HE SAY THEY REPLACE THE HEADS (COBRA JET HEADS) PEOPLE SAY TO ME THOSE HEADS ARE NOT COBRA JET HEADS CAUSE MY HEADS HAVE 14 EXHAUST BOLTS EACH SO I DONT KNOW I THEY ARE CJ HEADS SOME GUYS SAY THE CJ HEADS HELP THE 390s TO BREATHE BEATTER. MY PREVIOUS CAR WAS 94 MUSTANG GT, THIS 67 GT HAVE MORE TORQUE I CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE IS BIG BUT I THINK ON HIGHWAY A 5.0 CAN GIVEME SOME TROUBLE THATS WHY I WOULD LIKE TO IMPROVE THIS 390. THANKSTO ALL FOR THIS GREATE INPUT AND TO THIS FANTASTIC FORUM! |
| | | LOL a 390GT did not receive a 428 crank! -- Royce, 05/09/2005
That's pretty silly.
A 390GT is no different from any other 390 except the heads are drilled for the GT exhaust manifolds and it received the 390GT camshaft, GT intake manifold and Holley 4V carburetor.

| | | | RE: LOL a 390GT did not receive a 428 crank! -- andrew3, 05/10/2005
You're right. My mistake. What I had heard was that it had the same factory camshaft as the 428CJ, not crank. So I mistyped that one. |
| | | | | Re: ok -- MIKE, 05/11/2005
So is the cam, intake, carburator, and heads. Im sure they help more than have a regular 390. |
| | | | | | No, heads are the same as any 390.... -- Royce, 05/11/2005
The 390GT heads were only different in that they were drilled to accept the small body exhaust manifolds which are among the most restrictive ever built by Ford. Otherwise they are the same heads used on any 352 or 390 that year.
A 390 puts out mountains of torque and is a blast to drive in a small car like a Mustang. Ford did not need to modify the engine because it was already a good performer. The big problem in these cars is traction, the stock size tires were woefully inadequate to handle all the torque.

| | | | | | | Re: so just dont touch the engine? -- MIKE, 05/11/2005
In fact is better to just dont touch this engine or modified crank, cam, heads or induction sistem to gain more power? |
| | | | | | | | Well.... -- Royce, 05/11/2005
Have you driven the car yet? These cars are a lot of fun completely stock.
Of course you can modify them and get more power. The problem for a lot of guys is that they modify the engine without a cohesive plan. All the parts need to be compatible. If you decide to modify any one thing, a set of headers gives the most bang for the least amount of trouble and a good value. A better intake like the Performer RPM or Blue Thunder. Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads are good too.
Be careful with the camshaft, it is the brain of the engine. The stock cam is a great choice for most people. Other popular cams are the Comp 268H and the Comp Cams 280H.

YES I DRIVE THIS BEAST! LIKE I SAY IN ONE OF MY POSTS MY PREVIOUS CAR WAS 94 MUSTANG GT 5.0L AND THIS FASTBACK HAVE TONS OF TORQUE I CAN FEEL THE DIFFERENCE THIS 390 IS BETTER THAN MY PREVIOUS CAR BUT I THINK A 5.0 CAN GAVEME SOME TROUBLE ON HIGHWAY CAUSE MY 390 IS HEAVIER THAN A 5.0 THIS 67 S CODE IS RATED 320HP@4800RPMs TORUQE=427Ft-Lbs@3200 THE GUY WHO SOLD THE VEHICLE TO ME TOLDME THE VEHICLE HAVE CJ HEADS , I DONT THINKSO CAUSE THE EXHAUST BOLTS ARE 14 ON EACH HEAD, THE CAR HAVE HEADERS I LIKE THE WAY IT RUNS I CAN BURN TIRES ALL DAY (DIFF 3.25 4SPEED TOPLOADER)IT REALY MOVES I JUST WANT MORE TORQUE AND HP. THANKS FOR THE INPUT ROYCE!! |
| | | | | | | | | RE: Well.... -- chuck f, 06/04/2006
royce- Why do you bother wasting your time with these people? |
| | | | | | | RE: No, heads are the same as any 390.... -- walt, 05/11/2005
you are right royce,we had lots of fun in the 390 67 mustang, modified with a c4ae-b cam,and if you broke the motor, ran to the local junk yardbought a 390 for about 25 bucks, have it running next day, darn thing had so much torque, that we would pull a 2nd gear hole shot for the fun of it,what realy helped was using the 428 cj intake, and headers, this was many moons ago |
| Looking at option for my 390 build -- Justin G, 05/05/2005
do I really need a roller cam if I am only looking for about 350 - 400 HP?
I am thinking about the Performer RPM setup with cam, intake, and heads.
Thanks |
| | RE: Looking at option for my 390 build -- giacamo, 05/06/2005
you can get numbers like that with stock partsand the right cam package and headers. |
| | RE: Looking at option for my 390 build -- zane, 05/09/2005
I recently did my 390 motor with RPM heads, intake, demon carb, crane hyd.cam with 553/565 final lift FPA headers. THe combination produced 270 hp/320ft/lbs at the rear wheels on a mustang dyno. Just for a comparison a fellow with a 429 CJ balanced and blue printed put down 232hp and 260 ft/lbs. I am more than happy with my build up the only thing I am adding now is erson full roller rockers to free up a little more HP. |
| | RE: Looking at option for my 390 build -- walt, 05/10/2005
i my self was looking into the roller cam set up,but .739 lift was too steep on the crane mechanicals, meaning fly cuts, reblanacing etc;i checked the comp cams also, almost the same,i'm limited to solids, because the block was not drilled for hydraulicsbut the price difference between the flat tappet, rollers is hugh,is there realy a benifit on the rollers,i don't realy know if it's worth the price |
| Tilt Steering Column -- Tim Rossol, 05/05/2005
I have a 1969 Mach 1 with a tilt steering column. The column does not lock in all positions. I am assuming that something is worn out. Are replacement parts available to rebuild these?
Also, were all tilt columns also swing away? Mine has never swung away, but I don't know if something is disconnected/missing or if it is not a swing away column. Does anyone have a diagram showing the individual pieces of these columns?
Thanks Tim |
| Original diff gear ratio -- MIKE, 05/05/2005
Does any one know what is the original diff gear ratio for 67 fastback s code 4 speed toploader. my door tag is missing. |
| | More than one option -- Tim Rossol, 05/05/2005
I don't know for sure, but I would think that it could be one of many different options. There are not many cars that came with just one choice for the axle ratio (Boss 351 with 3.91's). You could order your FREE History 999 report from Ford (call 1 (800) 392-3673 and enter option 4) or the Marti report (http://www.fomoco.com/vinreports.htm) for a charge. The report from Ford takes a couple weeks, but again, it is FREE.

| | | RE: More than one option -- MIKE, 05/05/2005
THANKS FOR THE INPUT. WHEN I GOT THIS VEHICLE IT COME WITH 4.11s IT WAS RIDICULES ON HIGHWAY, I REPLACE THE GEARS USING 3.25 IT RUNS BETTER BUT RPMs STILL TOO HIGH AND SPEEDOMETER IS ABOUT 10 OR 15 MPH OFF. |
| | RE: commonly... -- McQ, 05/06/2005
The standard rear gear set for the 390GT cars was typically 3.25:1. I think that factory equipped air conditioned cars got the 3.00:1, with that higher ratio set being the only option away from the standard 3.25:1. This is for 1966-68. Any other ratios, from 3.50, lower(higher numeric) had to be dealer/owner installed.
This is from memory, but I remember it well, because I thought it was ridiculous that Ford would factory install even a 3.50 set for the stick shift GT's.
3.25 is a very nice all around road driving ratio. I've found 3.50 to be very easy to live with, while with a stick, 3.89's are my preference. Any lower gearing and the engine buzz gets tough to handle along with the more frequent stops for $2.59 per gallon fuel.
Now you take a good old tough Borg Warner T-85 3 speed with Overdrive and you can easily live with 4.56's! But that's getting away from your original question. |
