First thing to look for is the big huge intake manifold that actually extends down below the valve covers. This is rather unique to the FE as the FE cylinder heads were once called "half heads".
Second, the FE had a water pump that was sort of like a Chevy and was offset away from the front of the block where the small block of 385 series (429/460) was more a complete part of the front of the motor.
Also, the FE valve covers will be sort of rounded where the 385 were more flat on top.
I don't remember when Ford quit producing these in trucks but I know I had a 76 F150 that had a 390 in it.
