C6 Select Shift vs Dual Range w/390

I have a '66 T-Bird (390) with a very early version of the C6 trans. I have read that later versions of the C6 are stronger and am considering buying and rebuilding a C6 "Select Shift" for my Bird instead of rebuilding the original. Is my shift linkage compatible with the later C6 ? Any other problems with the swap ?
