if you don't have a mechanic's stethoscope, you can use a long screwdiver to listen and try to locate the source. put the handle end against your ear and the pointed end to the valvecover with the engine running and listen. move the screwdriver over the valvecover above the rockers to locate the noisey lifter or lifters. then remove the valve cover and check for excessive play or wear in the rocker shaft, push rod or rocker arm. you will have to tun the engine until both valves are closed on each cylynder that you check. you can also run the engine with the valve cover off to locate the noisey lifter, however this gets a little messy. good luck, rick |
