It sounds like the 4-speed Mustang 390 ran well, but I wonder if gears had something to do with that article. I suspect Ford tended to sell highway geared Mustang and Fairlane GTs more often than the competition did shallow-geared GTOs and Chevelles.
I'm not fond of the stock configuration of the 390GT engine, as the manifolds are restrictive compared to the rest of the engine, I do agree that the 390GT is a strong, perky, fun engine in stock trim, and is readily awakened to become a CJ+ type of animal with only a couple bolt-on changes.
