From my experience in the past, they work better on motors without a lot of manifold vaccum and are better suited to a race engine. Keep in mind it's been a while since I've built an FE and technology has come a long way since then, I think they are less likely to come off the guide under hi performance use since it must be machined to accept them, so that's an advantage.
