If your planning on serious ground pounding I'd go with the 31, although I have a 28 spline setup in my car now and it has survived many holeshots, although I never had any tires that hooked up at all, same year mustang with a 390 and 4 speed and N2O. I snapped a driveshaft once, but the rearend held together which still amazes me since it is just a 2 pinion traction lock with 3.91 gears. I think a locker will be a little harder on the parts.
