oil pump gasket

hello,i recently pulled the oil pump from a 390 i am rebuilding and noticed that there was a gasket btween the oil pump and block.
on a prior 390 rebuild there was no gasket between the pump and block.
does anyone know if this gasket is mandatory or not?
i know the oil pump pickup needs a gasket and i heard if that one is left out the engine will suck air.
