Holes in Block

Hi:

While trying to get the casting numbers off my FE (trying to ID the engine), I noticed two drilled and tapped holes (right now unplugged) at the base of the cylinder block just above the oil pan on the Passanger Side. One hole is up front (by number two journal) and the other is in the back (by number 4 journal).

I have run this engine and tested for leaks and there are none.

What are these holes for and what do you recommend I do to plug them up.
