octane may be the culprit

If your engine is nearly stock (camshaft, compression ratio, cast iron cylinder heads, etc) it will have a tendency to run on (diesel) if your octane level sinks to low. On a hot engine, the cylinder pressure alone coupled with a hot spot in the combustion chamber causes the engine to run on after the ignition is turned off. If this has never happened to you in the past and you haven't changed anything, more than likely, you got a bad tank of gas with low octane in it. It will have a tendency to ignite easier under those conditions. In the later 70's cars were equyipped with anti dieseling solenoids which closed the carb throttle plate completely to avoid this problem due to the lower octane of the fuel being supplied.
Hope this helps,
Greg
