It should take 6 qts.

That motor shouldn't ping even on 87 octane. I have a '71 F100 with .020 shaved off the heads and shim head gaskets and use 87 with 10 to 12 degrees initial timing. The stock compression is only 8.4.
You neeed to check out your distributor advance, vacuum advance and total timing or have someone do it for you. You could also have serious carbon build up.
