'61 ranchero diff

hi all! - wondering if anyone can help me identify the diff on my recently acquired '61 ranchero: It does not seem to be the standard 7-1/4" rear, and I can't find a ford ID plate on it: viewed from the back of the car it seems fairly hefty, with a symmetrical, octagonical arrangement of 8 bolts (accessible from the BACKSIDE) but with an off center lump, like a 9" (I think). The vin # sez AXLE-"J" which I've seen identified on a 1964 galaxie vin plate as an "Equa-lock" although this still doesnt tell me the ratio, and I've never seen one to know if this I.D. is correct.
...any ideas, any body?
thanx

 For 1960-1961 models, axle 'J' = 3.50:1 conventional ('open'). [n/m] -- Mr F, 12/11/2005
