Here's a couple of things you can look at externally to see if some of the CJ parts are there:

Intake manifold should have a casting # of C8OE-9425-G. This casting # will be right behind the carb base.

Next look between either the #2-3 or #6-7 spark plugs for a casting # which should be C8OE- N - especially look for that -N- ifyou're having a tough time seeing in that tight space. You might use a rag/solvent/carb cleaner to clean that area up to have a better look. Take a flash light too.

As for the block, you're right that a 390/428 look identical externally. There will be a 352 cast on the right front side deck - just below the head (the right being driver's side). Most late sixties 352/390/410/428's had this number cast there. Now if you can get under the Mach you might be able to find a casting # on the block but it will be difficult to see and a dirty little job. I don't have those #'s handy because, sadly, I don't have a CJ block around anymore.

There should be others jumping in to give you even more and likely better advice.
