67 390 gt Rocker issues

I have a 67 390 gt Mustang. I just started the new rebuilt engine and after about twenty minutes of run time it start making some scary noises. I pulled the valve cover assuming that I had some big problems only to find that one of the rocker arms had slid off the valve and was now pushing the valve spring up an down. Does anyone know why this would happen and is there a better way like roller rockers or something like that.
