This hasn't happened to me, but I've seen 2 or 3 posts on the various FE forums with this problem. I think it would happen with new shafts.

The correct way to install the shafts is with the holes toward the head, not the valve cover. That's because that's where the pressure/friction is. If you put the holes toward the valve cover, you'll get a lot of oil loss plus no oil where you need it. There's already too much oil going to the rocker shafts on an FE. If you install the shafts upside down, you'll quickly fill up the valve covers with oil, and a fair amount will go down the valve guides.
