RE: FE versus 409 Chevy |

The FE had a few good years in the 60's,but nothing to write home about. When you consider that the FE was strangled at the hands of the Chrysler Hemi, its easy to see why Ford desparately needed a replacement engine in the racing ranks. Enter the Boss 429 and 429CJ/SCJ! But going back to the 60's,there were a few heavy hittin Pontiacs with SD 421 power that showed the FE the quick way home a few times. The Chevy 409 was ok in its day,but it really is a POS! There were small blks that went head to head against the 409 and won many times, but noone ever hears about that. Correct me if Im wrong, but I think it was the 1960 (?) Daytona 500 that was won by a "MEL" powered T-Bird with a 430 in it. Ever since NASCAR mandated small blocks for racing,Fords have won more races with small block power than they ever did with FE power, thus making the "royalty" the small block (windsor). |
