RE: 390 block #'s

I have a friend that has an FE block but we dont have a clue to what it is? It has special cast under the intake in the lifter valley,and some letters but they dont look like casting numbers. We are thinking it to be maybe a 406 or a 390 Hp? If you can help we need it.
