The numbers (9", 9 3/8") relate to the ring gear diameter, but you can only measure that if it's apart. I guess you want to ID one in the dirt? 9" diffs have ribs running vertically and horizontally across the housing in the pinion area of the 'pumpkin'. 9 3/8 are similar but with a major change which makes them easily identifiable, in that there is a 'squiggly' rib running from top left down to bottom right of the housing. Bit like a letter 'S'. Hard to explain and a pic would show you but you get the idea. HTH
