About 6 years ago the exhaust valve head came off and dropped into my 428CJ and you can imagine the ensuing carnage. That season was over, I was starting abusiness and I was way too broke to fix the CJ. A buddy says get a 390 and throw it ibot the hole and go racing. I did and since I was not worried about my $300 motor had a blast for 4 seasons. I picked up a 390 short block from a friend, it was seized slightly so I took some pistons out ( had to tap them hard) them the crank started to turn. The rings were stuck in the pistons so hard I had to cut them out on a lathe (used them anyway). Cleaned everything up, my brother had a 390 box rebuild kit someone had gave him, all no name or should be nameless parts. The second piston ring was too thick so I ground it to thickness to fit. Puit the short block together with a small Crower mechanical cam. Got a set of heads from another guy that I stuck some CJ valves in and cleaned up the ports, Used my PI intake and a 750 DP. That engine went a best of 11:50@118 ina 3200 lb car which works out to 375 hp. 400 hp out of a 390 is not hard but it will take a decent camshaft and a rough idle. Thank God Stanley was not around to give me advice or the car would only have gone in the 15's and I would have been happy with it. |
