Agreed, however Ford marketing probably didn't see a need to start using the term "Family" and adopt unique family names until the growing mish-mash of engine applications started to confound the public in 1970.

>No - 'MEL' and 'FE' were in use, long before '68.

I beg for a reference (I don't grouss in this kinda situation - I plead). I suspect that FE and MEL may have been engineering names first attached during development because the Edsel project was code-named the "E-Car Project". It makes sense that the engine projects may have found code-names such as "FE-Engine Project" and "MEL-Engine Project". Hey, Ford was proud of the Edsel during early development, and it was good karma to be "in" on the development. I'm suspecting the acronym "FE" dates back to shortly after April 15, 1955 (birth of the Edsel project), but it was lost to the public because there was no need for a more in-depth identifier until the engine groupings at Ford started to get confusing in 1970. I suspect an FE engine designer suggested the acronym when marketing was asking around for "family name" ideas in 1970, and it stuck solid when it hit the printing press.

Anyhow, if we can buy a few more years (back to 1968), this'll put us closer to finding a possible origin.

Shoe.
