The spec is there for a reason but I have had three Ford engine builders tell me excess side clearance is not dangerous. The oil pressure (and flow) is controlled by the bearing-to-journal clearance not the rod side clearance.
I am dealing with a similar problem stemming from an improperly ground crank. I am trying to avoid buying a new crank and paying for a rebalance of the reciprocating assembly.
