do you have the correct radiator cap?

It's getting tougher to find FE-compatible radiator caps at the corner auto parts store.

I've bought caps rated at the correct pressure, but they are apparently redesigned for emissions-era "overflow" systems, not the old fashioned "hose to the dirt" design found in my FE cars.

Look on the bottom of your radiator cap for that dime-sized valve which is in the dead-center. If it's "spring loaded closed" against the bottom, then you've got the right cap. If it's just dangling without any spring force, it's gonna try to spit antifreeze into a non-existant "overflow" tank.

I've never studied the theory behind this "newer than the FE" type of radiator cap, so I don't understand how it's supposed to work. All I know is you don't want to use the "dangling dime valve" type of cap - you want the type with the "spring loaded dime valve".

Shoe.
