...you should be able to tap the old tube out without any problem.

If the "stub" of the old tube is sticking out of the block, just pry it out with a pliers. If that doesn't work, you can tap it out of the hole pretty easily from the cranksaddle area, assuming the oil pan is off and you've got a reasonably sized punch or screwdriver.
