I had a late model 5.0-liter that was always spitting out small chunks of slag into the radiator. I rigged up a screen to catch all this junk by using a reinforced knee-high stocking (don’t laugh). Have your significant other go to the store and buy a box of Leggs knee-highs with the reinforced toe. Believe me you will get funny looks if you buy them yourself. Take one out of the box and pre-stretch it then cut it in half. You will be using the “toe” end. Disconnect the top radiator hose and shove the stocking into the top tank. Wrap the last inch or so back around the circumference of the inlet fitting. While holding the end of the stocking around the inlet, carefully shove on the top hose and tighten the clamp. This will hold the stocking in place. Make sure the clamp is tight, Sometimes the antifreeze can wick out where the stocking is exposed to the outside. If you have a lot of junk in the engine the sock will have to be replaced every few months or so. I’ve had them last over a year before ripping open. There is plenty of surface area so it won’t clog or restrict flow, all the bits and pieces end up in the toe section. May not be elegant but it sure is cheap and works great. You will be amazed at how much crap comes out.
