Unleaded fuel has been around for more than 50 years and it's only recently that the need for "Hard Seats" has been pushed. I agree that the newer engines that have an inferior grade of iron need the hard seats but, I log about 80,000 miles a year and have been since 1969 using AMOCO unleaded with no severe valve and/or seat problems. Around 1971 the manufacturers started induction hardening the valve seats and flame hardening the combustion chambers as they knew that the combination of a 195 to 205 degree thermostat, high compression and unleaded gas could cause problems. I for one, have never had a problem. I no longer run higher than 11 to 1 compression on the street any more. I believe that a well built engine at or below 11 to 1 compression will live very satisfactorily without hard seats. |
