FE Swap To Small Block

I have a 1976 F100 Explorer and I am considering swapping my 428 FE with a C6 for a small block engine. I need some opinions and ideas for this before I make a decision. I am looking for better highway performance and all around gas mileage. I do have an extra 351C with a C4 tranny. The 351C needs a rebuild before attempting to use it for anything. As far as towing or hauling goes I do very little of that, so the big FE is overkill really. This truck came with a very anemic 360 originally. Any information and opinions will be helpfull.
