Uh...Do What?

In researching my newly acquired '67 Galaxie 2dr 390 cid I found out that my transmission is a Cruise O Matic (MX). Can anyone tell me what the MX means? I also found out that my 9" rear end ratio is a paltry 2.75:1. Will I have any foreseeable problems if I add a little beefier gear given my drivetrain combination?
