FE means Ford Edsel. This engine was introduced in 1958 and used in both car lines.
The MEL engine (383-462) was introduced in 1958 also. In 1958 Mercury had a 383, the Edsel had a 410 and the Lincoln had a 430.
I recall seeing some literature to that effect in my god-fathers new Edsel in 1958. Of course the FE designation was dropped for several years when the Edsel jokes started. |
