put a stop in the cylinder and run the engine around one way and mark the balancer and then back the other way and mark the balancer and then split the difference on the balancer to get TDC. i made a stop from an old spark plug and a nylon bolt (hard nylon). when i am building serious engines i mark the balancer for all 8 holes and then when it is running i check cylinder timing on all 8. i have found some distributors don't fire all 8 at the right time. the durasparks are real good but points distributors may have mis-manufactured cams (i had an accell that had one hole 6 degrees out and you could measure it on the breaker cam with a measuring tape!
