How about Ford Engineering saying otherwise. |

This is from a document copyrighted by Ford Motor Company in 1966 which claims on many pages that the "Fairlane V-8" or "Fairlane Engine" or "Fairlane Series Engine" are the name of the 221-260-289 engine family.
You can be sure that Ford and everybody else dropped this designation after 1966 when the big block was stuffed into the Fairlane and thus confusing the original intent of the name.
The only folk who will claim that FE refers to "Fairlane Engine" are those who have heard the term, but are not aware it was actually attached to the small block.
Be aware there are numerous trivial errors in the Jim Dove article, but this does not detract from it's value as a valuable document which offers unique FE performance information.
When questioned nowadays, Ford Motor Company will claim that FE stands for "Ford Edsel".
