Two Car Divisions...Two Engine Families |

LINC/MERC (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) was at one point was a separate entity from FORD in the late fifties.
Both Engine Families (FE and MEL) were introduced for the 1958 model year.
FE represents FORD/EDSEL. The 332/352 was introduced to the FORD line. The 361 was in the same engine family and was introduced in the FORD based EDSEL Series.
MEL represents Mercury/Edsel/Lincoln. The 410ci. MEL engine was unique to the MERCURY based EDSEL, while the 383/430 was used in the MERCURY's and the 430 in the LINCOLN.
Very easy to understand, as there were actually two series of EDSELS introduced in 1958.
It is the same confusion with everyone identifying the small blocks (221/302) as WINDSORS. The only true WINDSOR is the 351 to differentiate it from the 351C/351M.
The 221 through 351W is included in the 90 Degree Engine Family.
