I've recently determined the typical location for FE casting numbers is just above the skirt at the #1 cylinder, and the text is always printed upside down, if it is present at all.
The marking became comparatively uncommon on FE blocks as the 1960s decade came to a close, probably because the marking did not indicated a specific block casting after 1965.
Here's a photo of an interesting "C7AE-A" marking on a 427 block, found in the standard FE location. Recall that the 1966-72 markings more often take the "CxME" form, not the "CxAE" form.
