I've never heard of a solid lifter clearance that big on any FE cam.

Since the clearance is designed to accommodate changes due the heat expansion and based on the previous paragraph I would close them up by .003 and see how it sounds and runs.

If it was Ok and would close them up to the CC spec and see how that works. (Or you could just jump in all the way and go straight to the CC spec.) If the CC spec is too tight you will find out quickly as the engine will develop a miss and/or the vacuum will fall off.

You can't really hurt the engine by closing them down. Its an old racing trick to test the cam; tighter with better performance usually means the cam is too small.
