In Denver you need about 20 degrees initial / 42 degrees total. Bottom line: turn the distributor clockwise a little at a time with a test drive between each adjustment. If it pings turn it back a little until best performance is achieved.

Many of the auto part store engine rebuilds come with 8:1 Silv - O - Lite or Badger pistons and have much lower compression than stock passenger car 390's. This makes the engine have less cylinder presssure and at high altitude it needs the ignition timing as high as possible.
