I did the same thing but pulled the tranny and bellhousing off.I was told you do need the spacer and it also fits between the starter and bellhousing I think.Its seems to me that might matter some on the starter gear and the teeth of the fly wheel.With mine on I still had the starter housing touching the fly wheel which made it impossible to turn the motor over with a large breaker bar and socket.Really had me worried about not turning over till I found the problem.
