I think gears are certainly prefered over belts (Jesel) and even chains too... but only if you have to bump start it, that is. I'm using Comp Cams best chain and it degreed up bang on within 1/2 degree on my new Crane Cam...my past Crower version of the dual roller was 6 degrees off...using their cam too! So there are chains, and there are good chains.
