28 or 31 spline

How strong are the standard 28 spline 9" rearend axels in a 69 Mustang. Will they hold up ok with 450hp or so? The car has a open rearend in it now, and I will be putting a street locker into it, and am wondering if I should get a 31 spline diffrential and put new axels in also while I am at it. I would rather not since my budget is getting a bit out of hand, but I want to make sure they will hold up ok.
