RE: What is the expansion tank for on the old 390's?

i have a 1967 gal.500 w/390. when i got it ,it would run hot and spit fluid after shutting it down. i rebuilt radiator and put on a $10.00 over flow tank and a cap that would allow overflow fluid to tank. i run a 180 f. stat, see if you can find a robert shaw stat,but hard to find now? i have not lost any fluid since.
