I'm working on a 67 Ford 390 engine. The problem is the engine bends a pushrod on the intake of the Driver's side rear cylinder. It does not knock, but it of course ticks and runs rough because the intake valve is not functioning properly on that cylinder. I pulled the pushrod out and the lifter was solid. It was the opposite of collapsed. I could not get it to compress or go down even with a ton of pressure. It was acting like a solid lifter. I checked the intake valve and it goes up and down smoothly. The rocker arms move on the rod easily. There is plenty of lubrication. The piston is moving up and down in the cylinder. I replaced the lifter with another new one that did compress fine, primed it, installed it and fired up the engine. The same thing happened almost immedaitely.
The question: What are all of the things that could cause a lifter to go "stiff" and bend a pushrod like that? |
