Am I getting ripped? Please help with engine prob |

Here is the deal. I bought a used 2000 Ford Mustang GT a little over a year. Last month my car was overheating and found out that I had to have the Head gasket replaced. Took into ford dealership and the repair cost $1500. One week later (about 1000 miles) I went on a climbing trip up in the Sierras. On my way home, I heard a loud pop. I pulled over and heard a harmonic banging. I was able to drive home and found in the morning that the spark plug had busted off. I take the car back to the dealer and they tell me that the plug had busted and fell into the engine and was not a result of their work on the head. I was told that the plugs are not removed during the head work. Can Head cause the above issue? I was told that the normal job would be $2600 but they would only charge me $1000. What do you think? What would you do? I believe that something could have happened during the work. It seems kind of fishy. Please advise.
Thanks,
