The standard rear gear set for the 390GT cars was typically 3.25:1. I think that factory equipped air conditioned cars got the 3.00:1, with that higher ratio set being the only option away from the standard 3.25:1. This is for 1966-68. Any other ratios, from 3.50, lower(higher numeric) had to be dealer/owner installed.
This is from memory, but I remember it well, because I thought it was ridiculous that Ford would factory install even a 3.50 set for the stick shift GT's.
3.25 is a very nice all around road driving ratio. I've found 3.50 to be very easy to live with, while with a stick, 3.89's are my preference. Any lower gearing and the engine buzz gets tough to handle along with the more frequent stops for $2.59 per gallon fuel.
Now you take a good old tough Borg Warner T-85 3 speed with Overdrive and you can easily live with 4.56's! But that's getting away from your original question. |
