A change of cam might help with the low end torgue.....maybe an RV cam, but I'd call Crane or one of the aftermarket cam companies and tell them what you are doing. Boat engines are different than car engines as they run under load all the time.....no coasting on the flats or going downhill. Raising the HP, probably means raising the rpm, which could be a no-no. Boat engines typically have stronger cranks and rods, but there is a limit. Mercruiser calls for somewhere in the 4200-4800 range for max rpm with their equivalent of a chev 350. They also run their prototype engines at full load for an astronimical amount of time before putting them on the market. I'd be very careful about trying to extract much more HP, but lowering the torque curve with a different cam sounds safe...er....sort of...well, I think so.
