Note this problem I had when rebuilding my 63 390...Started up first crank with total rebuild and a new Edelbrok 390 Performer intake and Comp Cams 268 cam. Smoked like hell, so I figured there must be an intake leak; had to run it smoking for 30 min. at 2000 RPM!! (By the way, this is my first FE). Re-torqued intake and it still smoked. Put new gaskets and silicone-sealed them and it still smoked! Put stock 4bbl. intake on it and it still smoked. Pulled the pcv valve and plugged it and it still smoked. (All this time I was asking questions from Ford afficionados.) I was about ready to cry, thinking I must have broken every ring on every piston, and thinking I would have to go through the whole thing again. I decided that it was too much oil entering the heads and restricted the flow with a partial rubber plug that I made. It stopped smoking!! Took myself back down to where I had my heads rebuilt and told them the valve stem seals weren't as good as they thought. Well, we got to talking and they called around and found out something that no one had thought of. They told me to mount my rocker shafts UPSIDE DOWN, where the oil holes pointed toward the head instead of the valve cover. I did this, took the oil restrictor plugs out that I made, and the darn thing hasn't smoked since!!

So guys, beware! Never rebuild and FE and leave the upper valvetrain alone. It was so worn out that there was too much room for oil to spew out after cleaning the gunk out of the shafts, and it filled the heads up with oil past the valve guides!

Let me know if any of you have ever had THIS problem before!
