385 Oiling |

Though Wholelotta Tom is often wrong about magazine writers like my pal Jim Smart, he's absolutely correct when it comes to 385 series oiling systems. As designed, they were just fine for trolling around at 2,000 rpm in a luxo-land yacht. High RPM work, on the other hand was problematic. There WAS a reason that the first dry-sump motors in NASCAR were the Boss 429s that debuted at Atlanta in March of 1969. I know that for sure because my Race spec Boss '9 is on the dyno as we speak. As I originally built it ,it has a wet sump. That's all about to change though due to the engine being able to run out from under the oil pump above 5,000 rpm. I should have known better, my old SCJ had the same problems. |
