There were 397 GTE's, 357 of them came with 427 side oilers and 40 came with 428 Cobra Jet power when the 427 was discontinued. One GTE is known to reside in England of the 150 that are in the registry.
They are fun cars and unique since they are the only Fomoco vehicle produced in 1968 with the 427 engine. All of the 427 GTE's came with C-6 Automatic trans. No other Cougar could be optioned with the 427 either, you had to buy the GTE package or get a lesser motor. Here's a link to the GTE website: http://www.theclassiccougarnetwork.com/
