I suspect a improperly adjusted choke? Your heat riser only help after the engine is started alowing heated air off the exhaust manifold to be drawn in so the engine won't lean out and stall. Usually fine tuning the choke settings can over come this delima. The initial setting and crack setting are very important to prevent you engine from running too lean (Stalls) or too rich (shoots black smoke out the tailpipe, no power and misses) All this takes place during the first 4 to 6 minutes you engine is running. after that the engine is warm enough that it don't need the choke or the heat riser systems.
