I don't think 390-400 rear-wheels is impossible, but it's probably at the limit of a street build. That's somewhere around 450 at the flywheel. If you do the oil mods, and other typical mods, it should hold together just fine. Once you've got the strength taken care of, worry about the power.
For the power, you'll want something like the Blue Thunder, Performer RPM, Sidewinder, 390 GT for an intake. Get a decent cam - solid (or roller) preferred. Do a simple port/polish, and a good valve job, headers, recurved dist, tuned carb, etc. Make sure your valve springs match your cam. Make sure you're rocker shaft/stands/rockers can handle your rpm and lift.
If you do it right, you should have 400+ pretty easy. 450 isn't unreasonable, it's at the limit of a typical street build. 450 would be easier for a 428, but only because of the extra inches. |
